Alex Ritchie is the Executive Director of The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law, an educational, non-profit organization dedicated to the scholarly and practical study of all aspects of natural resources and energy law. Previously, Alex was the Leon Karelitz Chair in Oil and Gas Law at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Law where he taught oil and gas law, property law, natural resources law, energy law, and business associations.
Before joining the UNM law faculty, Alex was Senior Corporate Counsel for Suncor Energy (U.S.A.) Inc., based in Denver, Colorado. Alex joined Suncor in 2009 after almost 10 years in the Energy and Natural Resources and Corporate Transactions practice groups at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP (formerly Holme Roberts & Owen LLP).
Alex is a co-author of the Tenth Edition of Cases and Materials: The Law of Oil and Gas (Foundation Press 2016) (with Martin, Kramer and Hall). Alex has taught and written on oil and gas, mining, environmental, and corporate legal issues, and has represented clients in oil and gas, mining, corporate, securities, commercial, mergers and acquisitions, and environmental matters.
Alex currently serves on the Advisory Council of the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources Energy and the Environment at the University of Colorado and on the Council for the Natural Resources & Energy Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association.
