This Special Institute provides a comprehensive look at the legal issues that should be considered before commencing natural resource or energy development on Indian lands. Following the general outline of an ongoing development project, the institute includes crucial information about applicable Federal, Tribal, and State laws, as well as political and environmental considerations. The faculty comes from a variety of backgrounds and viewpoints, including representatives from the oil and gas, mining, and renewable energy industries, Tribal governments, legal scholars, and former Federal officials. Early presentations cover basics of conducting business in Indian Country, including crucial jurisdictional issues and pitfalls that developers should keep in mind. Subsequent presentations cover nuanced issues and advanced details of transacting with Tribal governments and their members, joint-venture and development agreements, ethics, permitting issues, and the ongoing trend of Tribes becoming active participants in developing their own natural resources.
