The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation (the “Foundation”) and the family of Charles Edgar “Chuck” Moran have created a new scholarship fund in memory of Chuck, who passed away unexpectedly in 2020. Chuck’s family and the Foundation want the scholarship established in Chuck’s name to be a lasting legacy, which can only be accomplished with an endowment of $150,000 or more. This amount will allow us to adequately fund an endowed scholarship in perpetuity that will have a meaningful impact towards the cost of a student’s legal education each year. To achieve this goal, Chuck’s family and a family friend have contributed a significant amount, but we need you – Chuck’s friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances, and supporters of the Foundation – to help us reach our goal.

The scholarship was created to commemorate Chuck’s passion for knowledgeable and accurate oil and gas exploration throughout the western United States. The annual scholarship will go to a student at a Foundation constituent law school, with a preference for a student interested in pursuing a legal or professional career in oil and gas or energy law or an applicant from Chuck’s alma mater, The University of Tulsa College of Law.

Born and raised in the Permian Basin, Chuck began his career as a landman with Yates Petroleum Corporation in Artesia, New Mexico, in 1992. He thoroughly enjoyed his long career in the oil and gas industry with the Yates Petroleum family and later with EOG Resources in Midland, Texas. Chuck was active in numerous organizations promoting the oil and gas industry. He was president of the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico in 2005 and was an enthusiastic member of New Mexico Oil and Gas Association throughout his career. He supported the Foundation and regularly attended its programs and seminars. He passionately engaged both presenters and fellow attendees with insightful discussion regarding the industries’ most pressing issues.
