This Special Institute provides a comprehensive look at the legal issues that should be considered before commencing natural resource or energy development on Indian lands. Following the general outline of an ongoing development project, the institute includes crucial information about applicable Federal, Tribal, and State laws, as well as political and environmental considerations. The faculty comes from a variety of backgrounds and viewpoints, including representatives from the oil and gas, mining, and renewable energy industries, Tribal governments, legal scholars, and former Federal officials. Early presentations cover basics of conducting business in Indian Country, including crucial jurisdictional issues and pitfalls that developers should keep in mind. Subsequent presentations cover nuanced issues and advanced details of transacting with Tribal governments and their members, joint-venture and development agreements, ethics, permitting issues, and the ongoing trend of Tribes becoming active participants in developing their own natural resources.

This program is essential for anyone considering an investment or development project on Indian or Tribal land. It will provide an enjoyable educational experience and networking opportunities for those interested in resource development in Indian Country.

We are holding our annual Water Law Institute simultaneously with this Institute. Attend the presentations of either Institute for one low registration fee! Registrants will receive the electronic course materials for both programs!
